ARLETA SCHOOL GARDEN GRANT | SE PORTLAND, OR
Inspiration for Creating the Arleta School Garden:
Caring for a garden helps children develop their cognitive skills by repeating tasks that build confidence. When young children get outside, they gain confidence by making simple choices—like which tree to run around or which flowers to pick. Exploring nature gives them the freedom to learn and observe without the pressure of homework or peer expectations. The sensory plants in this garden were carefully selected to engage every sense and help reduce anxiety and stress for each visitor.
Our Journey
In October 2013, our Arleta School Garden Committee recognized a chance to enhance the grounds at our neighborhood school. While my son was in Kindergarten with Rose Hurner, I applied for a grant to help beautify our school grounds and inspire greater pride in our K-8 community.
Fortunately, we received funding from SE Uplift and the Neighborhood Small Grants Program. With their support, we created a Sensory Plant Garden that could be enjoyed from the classroom windows and outside in the courtyard.
On June 26, 2025, I passed by Arleta School and saw more than six new raised beds. herbs, perennials, vegetables, and berries have been added to inspire and support growing fresh food. Twelve years after the original installation, our community’s commitment to the garden remains strong.
